Faculty Development Workshop Explores Clinical and Translational Research Opportunities

SOARnet will host a faculty development workshop on “Clinical and Translational Science Awards”  on Friday, November 20, 2009, 1:30-4:00 p.m., at the Children’s Medical Center of Dayton (Private Dining Room A). The workshop presenter is Ron Ackermann, M.D., M.P.H., assistant professor of medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine.

The Southwestern Ohio Area Research Network (SOARnet) is a new and growing group of pediatricians and family medicine physicians associated with Wright State University and the Children’s Medical Center in Dayton, Ohio. Its mission is to support its members to design and carry out office-based clinical research of importance and interest to its members, to other primary care providers, and to those involved in formulating health policy. The research network facilitates the formulation of clinical questions and provides support in study design and statistical analysis of data.


BioOhio Conference Focuses On ‘Going Global’

bioohio_logoThe 2009 BioOhio annual conference is scheduled Sept. 30-Oct. 1 at Embassy Suites Dublin/Columbus. “BioGPS: Global Positioning for Success” will feature  topics on the globalization of bioscience business and research, including:

  • conducting foreign clinical trials;
  • the global impact of Ohio’s Third Frontier Project;
  • and the influx of overseas companies expanding in Ohio.

The keynote speaker will be Jeffrey Wadsworth, president and CEO of  Battelle, who will describe the global success and future ambitions of the world’s largest non-profit independent research and development organization.

Panelists/presenters will include P&G Health Care’s Kevin Driscoll, U.S. Export Assistance Center Director Roberta Ford, Dr. Michael Knopp of the Wright Center of Innovation in Biomedical Imaging, the Center for Stem Cell & Regenerative Medicine Executive Director Dr. Debra Grega, Proxy Biomedical’s Peter Gingras, and more. Radio Rounds Hosts Live Show August 11

radio_rounds_green_logo2The second season of Radio Rounds premieres at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 9. Follow the link to listen to a live audio stream or download a podcast of the show. The show’s special guest is Dr. Brian Cole, head team physician for the NBA’s Chicago Bulls and Professor of Orthopedics at Rush University Medical Center. Dr. Cole was recently named the 2009 NBA Team Physician of the Year.

Radio Rounds is the nation’s first medical radio talk show produced entirely by medical students. It was launched last year by a group of students in the class of 2012 at Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine.

On Tuesday, August 11, Radio Rounds producers Avash Kalra and Lakshman Swamy will host a full-audience, live show from 12:00-1:30 p.m. in the Gandhi Auditorium in White Hall (101 WH) on the Wright State main campus.

The show is sponsored by the American Medical Students Association (AMSA) chapter at Wright State. Lunch will be provided by AMSA. All BSOM students, faculty and staff are invited to attend.

Special guests for the live show include:

  • Dr. Howard M. Part, Dean of the Boonshoft School of Medicine
  • Dan Henderson, AMSA Health Justice Fellow (Mr. Henderson is flying in for this event)
  • Casey McCluskey, MS2 (Casey will discuss her recent and ongoing “patient perspective”)
  • There will also be a few surprises, as well as an opportunity to win gift card prizes!

Upcoming Radio Rounds programs will feature Dr. Gloria Wilder, the CEO and founder of Core Health; several nationally-renowned physician-authors, NY Times columnists, and NPR contributors such as Stephen Bergman, Elissa Ely, and Sandeep Jauhar; the medical director for the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots; and Wright State faculty members such as Dr. Paula Termuhlen.

2009 Earl Morris Lecture Scheduled July 10

Oliver Smithies, D.Phil.Oliver Smithies, D.Phil., winner of the 2007 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine, will deliver the 2009 Earl H. Morris Endowed Lecture at Wright State University on Friday, July 10. His presentation, entitled “60 years as a bench scientist,” will take place in Gandhi Auditorium in White Hall on the WSU campus and will begin at 10:30 a.m. The lecture, sponsored by the WSU Boonshoft School of Medicine Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, is free and open to the public. The Earl H. Morris Endowed Lectureship was established by Herbert and Marion Morris to honor Herbert’s father, Earl H. Morris, M.D. Dr. Earl Morris was born in Bellbrook, Ohio, received his M.D. from the University of Cincinnati Medical School and practiced family medicine in the Dayton area for more than 50 years. Mariana Morris, Ph.D., professor and chair of pharmacology and toxicology and assistant vice president for graduate programs with the medical school, noted that the endowed lecture series has brought some of the world’s leading scientists and physicians to Wright State, a tribute to Earl Morris’ lifelong dedication to the science of medicine.

The BSOM Research Club will hold its first meeting of the 2009-2010 academic year on Monday, August 24,  from 12:00-1:00 p.m. in Room 120 White Hall on the WSU main campus. Lunch will be provided. This will be an opportunity to welcome medical students in the entering class of 2013, who can get an overview about planning a research experience during medical school. More details will follow. Proteomics Symposium Scheduled Oct. 31

The WSU Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology will present a research symposium on “Proteomics in Modern Medicine” on Friday, Oct. 31, from 1:00-4:00 p.m. in 101 White Hall (Gandhi Auditorium). The symposium will be followed by a reception from 4:00-5:00 p.m. in the White Hall lobby.

Richard Caprioli, Ph.D. The symposium features the 2008 Earl H. Morris Endowed Lectureship, which will be given by Richard Caprioli, Ph.D. (left), Stanley Cohen Professor of Biochemistry and director of the Mass Spectrometry Research Center at Vanderbilt University. His lecture is titled “Clinical Proteomics: Insight into Disease Process.” Dr. Caprioli is interested in the use of mass spectrometry for the analysis of compounds in biological systems, including current work in the use of electrospray and laser desorption ionization methods with biological tissues and samples. In 2003, he received the Thomson Medal Award from the International Mass Spectrometry Society, and he currently serves on the board of directors of both the international Human Proteome Organisation (HUPO) and the U.S. HUPO. He received the Field and Franklin Award from the American Chemical Society in April 2006 and has been named as one of the “Pioneers in Proteomics” by the National Institutes of Health.

Other presentations include “Rapid Enzyme Inhibitor Screening Using Mass Spectrometry” by Kenneth Greis, Ph.D., associate professor of cancer and cell biology and director of proteomics and mass spectrometry at the University of Cincinnati Genome Research Institute; and “Use of Mass Spectrometry in Neuroendocrine Profiling” by David Cool, Ph.D., associate professor of pharmacology and toxicology and director of the Proteome Analysis Laboratory at Wright State University.
